Headlight Restoration in Tucson

Polycarbonate headlight lenses fail from the outside in, and Tucson's UV load accelerates it dramatically. Restoration removes the degraded layer, refines the surface back to clarity, and adds protection so the process starts over as slowly as possible.

Gloved hands polishing a hazy headlight lens back to clarity with masking tape around the housing

Why Arizona headlights yellow so fast

Modern headlights are polycarbonate with a factory-applied UV-resistant hard coat. That coating is a consumable. Under sustained ultraviolet exposure it breaks down, and once it fails the polycarbonate underneath oxidizes — first as a faint haze, then a yellow or milky cast, then visible crazing.

In a low-UV climate this takes many years. In Tucson, especially on vehicles parked outdoors facing south or west, it happens noticeably faster. The forward-facing angle of most headlight lenses means they collect close to maximum sun exposure all day.

What restoration involves

The failed coating and oxidized surface layer are removed by wet sanding through progressive grits, which flattens the yellowed material and any light pitting. The lens is then machine polished back to optical clarity. At that point it looks excellent — and it is also completely unprotected.

The final and most important step is applying a UV-resistant protective layer. Skipping it is why so many DIY restorations look great for two months and then yellow again quickly; bare polycarbonate under Arizona sun degrades rapidly.

Realistic expectations

Surface oxidation and yellowing respond very well. Damage that is not on the surface does not: internal condensation, a delaminated internal reflector, deep cracking through the lens, or moisture inside the housing are not polishing problems. Heavy rock-chip pitting can be improved but may remain faintly visible.

Lenses that have already crazed deeply sometimes clean up beautifully and sometimes reveal that the damage extends further than the surface. We assess before quoting rather than promising a specific outcome sight unseen.

Making it last in Tucson

Parking in a garage or shade is the single largest factor in longevity. Beyond that, keeping the protective layer intact matters — avoid scrubbing lenses with abrasive pads or harsh cleaners, and include them when protection is refreshed on the rest of the vehicle.
