Why fabric holds contamination
Automotive cloth is a dense woven or knit pile bonded to foam. Anything liquid soaks in and spreads laterally, then dries within the fiber. Anything dry, like Tucson's fine dust, works down between the fibers and stays. Both are physically inside the material, not on it.
Compounding this, cloth seats absorb sweat, and summer here produces a great deal of it. That is the usual source of the faint musty smell in an older cloth interior.
Extraction, done with moisture control
Seats are vacuumed thoroughly, including seams and the gap where the back meets the base. Soiled areas and traffic zones are pre-treated and allowed appropriate dwell time. Agitation breaks the soil loose from the fiber, then hot water extraction rinses and pulls the contamination out.
The technique deliberately limits how much moisture reaches the foam. Saturated foam takes far longer to dry and can produce exactly the odor you were trying to remove. Dry desert air is a real advantage on the drying side, but it is not a licence to over-wet.
Stains, sun fade and what to expect
Drinks, food, and general soiling usually respond well to extraction. Older spills that spent a summer being heat-cycled may only lighten. Sun-faded fabric — very common on rear seat backs and rear parcel shelves in Tucson — is a colour loss issue, and cleaning cannot restore pigment that UV has bleached out.
Keeping cloth seats in condition
Vacuum regularly so dust does not work deeper. Blot spills immediately rather than rubbing them in. Use a sunshade — it reduces both fading and the heat that drives spills into the fiber. A fabric protectant applied after cleaning helps future spills sit on the surface long enough to be blotted up.
